[link]I dunno I looked at that I am really considering to be...a fraud. A friend of mine is a lawyer in the States and he hadn't mentioned anything about this bill--and the main bulk of where lawyers get their business is from copyright law.
Also, what puts up warning flags for me is the fact that the sites that are linked want you to send them x amount of money so they can get you a copyright in like 9 months or something, which to me seems kind of convenient, and horribly fishy, I signed the petition anyways, and its always good to have your stuff copyrighted, BUT until I hear it from someone more reliable then 'random guy on the internet who I have never heard of who writes an article like a highschooler' then I am going to just sit tight really. The whole idea is is completely absurd. Thinking about major art industries and firms (Diseny, Dreamworks, ect ect ect), you'd think you would hear something from them as well eh?
EDIT People just seem to concentrate on the fact that I mentioned that being Canadian means that I am exempt from this, where the bigger issue is the fact that its possible that it's all a GIGANTIC FRAUD. Which is the more important issue.
Think about it! They make this bill, and people make a big fuss over it, and people in a panic start copyrighting all their shit, then they don't pass the bill, because 'everyone' made a big stink about it. But they still have your money that you sent on copyright. Just seems like a clever ploy to me.
One of those things where I really hope I am right.
It's like, come on. Legalizing that? What do they hope to gain from doing that? Mass chaos? A bunch of law firms going out of business?
Governments don't do things to cause them more headaches, no one does anything thats 'hard' there has to be some sort of payoff. Thats how people work. Besides allowing random 12 year olds on the internet stealing your crappy artwork and having the joy at laughing at you from behind a desk--what will they get out of this?
ALSO.
THINK ABOUT THE TERM 'ORPHANED'
What does it mean when a child its orphaned? Or something is orphaned? It means it DOESN'T HAVE AN OWNER.
It's clearly not legit. According to US copyright law, an Orphaned Work is only a piece of artwork whose creator can not be identified. So it only affects you if you never attribute anything to yourself and stay 100% anonymous.
No one is "stealing" anything. Orphaned Work merely falls into public domain. It's like most Christmas music.
Thank you ~Usagi-Kage for that lovely clarification. lol
